Loïs Mailou Jones

Women’s History Month: Loïs Mailou Jones

"Mine is a quiet exploration—a quest for new meanings in color, texture and design. Even though I sometimes portray scenes of poor and struggling people, it is a great joy to paint." -  Loïs Mailou Jones

It's Women's History Month and this month we are celebrating artist Loïs Mailou Jones. Jones was an American painter and educated influenced by textile design. She was also influenced by the Harlem Renaissance, a cultural and artistic movement in 1920s Harlem NY. Jones displayed these influences throughout her artwork using bright patterned colors and figure painting. In this class you will paint your very own version of "Grosses" created by Jones in 1980. Combine figure painting and bright patterns just like Jones in our "Paint like Loïs Mailou Jones" class in the month of March and learn more about this powerful artist in Women's History. The class will be led by one of our jammin' instructors and take you step by step through your very own Loïs Mailou Jones style painting.
